Design Concept
Well Spread is a recipe-sharing and social baking application centered around the cultural history and communal nature of bagels. Inspired by the long-standing tradition of bagels as shared meals and social rituals, the project explores how food can foster connection, creativity, and community across generations. Drawing from the history of the bagel—from its origins in seventeenth-century Poland to its association with vintage New York City culture—the app positions baking as both a personal and collective experience.
Visually, the interface combines references to vintage print media with contemporary digital aesthetics. Analog collage elements, aged paper textures, and publication-inspired layouts evoke the feeling of old newspapers and magazines, while bold sans serifs paired with vintage-inspired serif typefaces establish a strong editorial hierarchy. These tactile references are contrasted with rounded interface components and glassmorphism-inspired UI elements, allowing the application to feel simultaneously nostalgic and modern.
The app’s customizable structure reflects the adaptability and individuality of bagel culture itself. Users are encouraged to experiment with recipes, develop their own variations, and share their creations through integrated social features designed to foster collaboration and interaction. By combining editorial aesthetics, tactile visual language, and community-focused functionality, Well Spread transforms a recipe app into a platform centered on creativity, friendship, and shared experience.
